WICHITA, Kan. — Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland congratulates Nicole S. for becoming a Gold Award Girl Scout, a designation she earned by creating a prayer labyrinth at the Aldersgate United Methodist Church
The Gold Award is the mark of the truly remarkable — earned by a high school Girl Scout who works to address an issue she’s passionate about in a way that produces meaningful and lasting change. Whether it’s on a local, national, or global level, Gold Award Girl Scouts provide innovative solutions to significant challenges.
“Gold Award Girl Scouts don’t just change the world for the better, they change it for good — and Nicole embodies everything this achievement stands for," said Rolinda Sample, chief executive officer of Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland. “Nicole addressed an issue that’s important to her —building a prayer labyrinth and educating her church on the uses — for her Gold Award, and we congratulate her on this momentous accomplishment.”
Passionate about celebrating her church and community, Nicole’s Gold Award project focused on revitalizing the Aldersgate United Methodist Church’s prayer labyrinth – a space used by members so they can walk and pray while focusing their mind on God – and educating members on how to use the area.
In the project, Nicole completely tore out the original labyrinth as the area was not functional, the path was unstable, and it did not have regular upkeep. She then led a team to reassess the area, lay limestone screenings, and then place the new bricks for the labyrinth pattern.
Nicole also created a program with instructions for a solo prayer or a group prayer that can be used in the labyrinth.
“I wanted to help out my church community by bringing people together to build the prayer labyrinth that they will then get to use,” Nicole said. “Now the labyrinth can be used by everyone at the church and people can have a chance to feel closer to God.”
