CHENEY, Kan. — Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland congratulates Kylie F. for becoming a Gold Award Girl Scout, a designation she earned by creating plarn mats from plastic bags for those experiencing homelessness.
The Gold Award is the mark of the truly remarkable—earned by a high school Girl Scout who works to address an issue she’s passionate about in a way that produces meaningful and lasting change. Whether it’s on a local, national, or global level, Gold Award Girl Scouts provide innovative solutions to significant challenges.
“Gold Award Girl Scouts don’t just change the world for the better, they change it for good—and Kylie embodies everything this achievement stands for," said Liz Workman, chief executive officer of Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland.
“Kylie addressed an issue that’s important to her— recycling plastic bags to reduce waste and use to create plarn mats for unhouse community members—for her Gold Award, and we congratulate her on this momentous accomplishment.”
Kylie’s Gold Award project aimed at addressing two tasks at once; providing extra warmth for unhoused community members during colder weather, and reducing the volume of plastic bags entering landfills. By learning to crochet and creating plarn mats from plastic bags, she was able to recycle materials while making protective gear to be shared with those experiencing homelessness. Kylie also filmed instructional videos for other community members to learn how to create plarn mats themselves to continue the work.
