WICHITA, Kan. — Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland congratulates Emily G. for becoming a Gold Award Girl Scout, a designation she earned updating the outdoor amphitheater at Camp Four Winds, the Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland camp located in Leon.
The Gold Award is the mark of the truly remarkable — earned by a high school Girl Scout who works to address an issue she’s passionate about in a way that produces meaningful and lasting change. Whether it’s on a local, national, or global level, Gold Award Girl Scouts provide innovative solutions to significant challenges.
“Gold Award Girl Scouts don’t just change the world for the better, they change it for good — and Emily embodies everything this achievement stands for," said Rolinda Sample, chief executive officer of Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland. “Emily addressed an issue that’s important to her — Girl Scout traditions and getting kids outdoors — for her Gold Award, and we congratulate her on this momentous accomplishment.”
Emily’s passions for theater, music, art and the outdoors culminated into her Gold Award project. At Camp Four Winds, the dilapidated amphitheater was unusable. Emily updated the amphitheater by tearing down the old backing and replacing it, fixing the concrete area and building new benches. Along with the updated space, she also created a book with songs and skits so she could share camp traditions with future Girl Scout campers. Emily’s goal was to not only to update the space at camp to make it usable, but to also help other Girl Scouts discover their interest for theater and music and help them gain confidence.
“I wanted to build a new, beautiful place in the outdoors so girls could perform by the camp fire doing songs and skits while gaining self-confidence,” Emily said. “Hopefully with future camps at Four Winds this space can be utilized and become a tradition for campers to enjoy.”
