Flying for the First Time PDF Print E-mail

Parsons_DC_Trip_WebsiteEight out of ten girls and one adult from Parsons had the opportunity to fly for the very first time as their troop traveled to Washington D.C. this summer. Many of these girls had also never been so far from home without their families. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity for many of these girls. The girls worked very hard for two years fundraising to make this trip possible. They participated in the Fall Opportunity Sale, Cookie Sale, and did many other fundraisers as a troop! The girls enjoyed the trip so much that they are currently starting to plan for their next major troop trip and figure out their fundraising!

Top Ten Lessons Learned from the Washington D.C. Trip:

  1. An airplane is just like a roller coaster but takes you to better places (8 Girl Scouts and one adult had never been on a plane)
  2. You really can get folded up like a taco in a hotel roll-away bed
  3. DC garbage trucks are louder than an earthquake (and they come every day, very early)
  4. The Washington Monument is really, really tall and the marble benches inside are the best place to sit on a hot day.
  5. No matter how tired you are you must see the FDR memorial
  6. At the Lincoln Memorial it looks like his hands are signing "A" and "L" in sign language
  7. If a restaurant is not busy at lunch time there is a reason...bad food and service
  8. You can feed 14 people at McDonalds for $54.
  9. When a panicked adult is separated from the group on a metro train the nice people of DC will help her make her way back to the group
  10. 10 Girl Scouts can set and reach a goals and become the best BFF's EVER!!!

Spring Camporee 2010

A little rain doesn't stop Daisies and Brownies from being a part of the Spring Camporee held at Camp Tablemound May 1 and 2. The Daisies and Brownies spent the day by participating in a water obstacle course, rainbow hike, animal charades, song fest and making rainbow bracelets. All activities were focused on the "Between Earth and Sky" journey for Daisies and the "WOW-Wonders of Water" journey for Brownies. At the end of the afternoon, after the Daisies had departed, the Brownies cooked their own meals at their campsites and prepared for camping out overnight. Just before sunset (if you could see it for the clouds), everyone enjoyed an all-camp campfire. Everyone woke to a beautiful sunny day the next morning when they departed.

iola_dandelion_day

Iola Girl Scouts spend May 1 giving out plants to anyone who brought in their dandelions from their yard, in honor of “Dandelion Day,” a 1908 tradition that they brought back last year.  They even had the city commissioners declare May 1 “Dandelion Day” in Iola.

farmcitydays1Northern Star (Iola) Girls Scouts manned, well "girled", their float for Iola's 38th Annual Farm City Days Parade. Their float featured a pup tent and a "fire" to roast their marshmallows on. The banner on the side of their float said "Girl Scouts: Where Girls Grow Strong." There were Daisy's all the way to Ambassadors participating in the parade with the little ones riding and the others walking the 10 long blocks for the parade, singing all the way.
