Girl Scouts in the Hutchinson area created delicious delights at Cooking Creations, an event where girls worked together to learn basic skills for creating healthy meals, used their imaginations to design culinary creations and discovered how to read recipes, measure ingredients, and were educated on the importance of health and safety precautions in the kitchen.
Vicki Foss from Cooking Creations in Hutchinson spent the day with 14 girls helping them to discover the world of cooking and the girls got a hands-on experience that they won't soon forget!
The girls boiled, fried, mixed, peeled, chopped, grated and assembled the ingredients for Shepherd's pie, Irish soda bread and Banoffee pie (an English pastry based cake made from bananas, cream, toffee and boiled condensed milk). This meal, the girls got to eat for lunch!
Later, Vicki showed them how to make tortilla roll-ups, chicken enchiladas and Mexican wedding cookies which are delicious nutty cookies that are rolled in powdered sugar. They took this meal home for supper. She also taught the girls that that if an unopened can of sweetened milk is boiled for three hours it will turn into the most delicious toffee, but they must keep the cans covered in water or they will explode.
Often, recipes must be adapted for people with special dietary needs and Vicki explained to the girls several ways that this could be accomplished. She also talked about the USDA food pyramid and ways to use it as a guide in making good meal decisions and to make sure they are getting the proper nutrients their bodies needed every day.
Lastly, Vicki talked to the girls about shopping for the right ingredients to ensure they have what they need to create the meals that they choose to cook. This event provided a great opportunity for the girls to work together for some creative cooking! Bon Appétit!
