Great Bend Girl Scout completes Quilt of Valor

Quilt of Valor, Great Bend

Chloe, a Girl Scout Senior from Great Bend who practices sewing in her Girl Scout troop, showed her creativity and her dedication to the Girl Scout Promise and Law by recently completing a Quilt of Valor for her grandfather, United States Army Vietnam Veteran Robert Dunavan.

She presented the quilt to her grandfather during a special ceremony from the Golden Plains Quilts of Valor on Dec. 30, 2016, at the American Legion Post 180 in Great Bend. The quilt top was made by Chloe, with quilting done by Amy Schartz Mellor of Golden Plains Quilts of Valor, a group of volunteers whose mission "is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor."

Chloe is the second Girl Scout from Troop 20210 in Great Bend to finish a Quilt of Valor. Troop Leaders Debbie Jones, Vicki Richardson and Diane Gibson have assisted and encouraged the girls in their multi-level troop in sewing. The troop leaders love to sew and are passing the skill on to the girls in their troop, a great example of leading the way like G.I.R.L.s (Go-getters, Innovators, Risk-takers, and Leaders)!
