Girl Scout Golf Troop teams up with Symetra Tour players

Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland’s new GirlSports Golf Troop in Garden City got a big boost this week from some inspirational role models: members of the LPGA’s Symetra Tour!

The new Girl Scout Golf Troop, a partnership with LPGA Girls Golf and the Buffalo Dunes Golf Course, participated in the Junior Girls Golf Clinic on Monday with players Emily Talley, Kathleen Ekey, Rachel Rohanna, Alejandra Llaneza and Nicole Jeray, along with golf teams from nine Kansas schools.

During the clinic at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course, Girl Scouts enjoyed hands-on lessons and learned about the players’ experiences as professional golfers. The players are in Garden City for the Symetra Tour Garden City Charity Classic.

The new Golf Troop launched in August as part of an effort to make golfing easily accessible to K-8 girls in southwest Kansas. Girl Scouts in the troop are instructed by Cole Wasinger, PGA Head Golf Professional at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course, with the help of the Garden City High School girls golf team. The troop, which continues through October, is an opportunity for girls to learn the game of golf, become better decision-makers, learn how to set goals and overcome setbacks, and develop leadership skills.
